Green Chaise

Looking around our neightborhood we found that there were really far too many concrete yards. It common to see people cover their front yard with cement so that they can safely park their excess automobiles there. However, this exceee concrete prevents water from infiltrating the land and overburdens our drainage systems. As you can see in the photograph above, we use gravel to create a semihard surface which allows water to penetrate and also allows more circulation at the ground level so it is less likely to get excessively hot or cold as temperatures change, effecting the climate of the yard. We engaged in designing comfortable and useful patio furniture which would collect rain water or only need refilling occasionally and then slowly wick the water into a synthetic growth medium and eventually to a root structure of a durable Australian grass. The construction of this subtle network proves to be an ongoing experiment.
